Known as Project Aion, and referred to internally as CopilotOS, the 2024 prototype was built around a modified Microsoft Edge shell and a lightweight Windows codebase called Win3.

The project is not a confirmed product. Microsoft has not said whether Aion was canceled or whether elements of it remain in development.

The leaked material resurfaced in July and was examined in detail by Windows Latest on Aug. 24. It includes an internal SharePoint site titled “CopilotOS” with sections including “The Pillars,” “AI Devices,” “Self Driving OS” and “Key Tech.”

Copilot Was The Desktop

Aion removed several familiar parts of Windows. The Win3 prototype had no conventional Start menu, no desktop icons and no local Win32 application support. Copilot instead served as the main way to launch and complete tasks.

Each Copilot conversation could open in its own window and appear as an application-like icon on the taskbar. The system also included “Spaces,” which grouped files, websites, applications and other resources around specific tasks.

Microsoft described Copilot as an “agent of agents” and envisioned it as a primary interface for completing tasks across users’ lives.

Windows 365 Handled Legacy Apps

Aion did not eliminate traditional Windows software entirely. When users needed applications the lightweight environment could not run, the prototype offered a “Launch Windows 365” option. That opened a streamed cloud PC running full Windows.

The design separated the AI interface from legacy applications: Copilot handled supported tasks locally, while Windows 365 provided access to conventional software. The prototype also included Context IQ, which could connect Copilot with Microsoft 365 information.

Because the interface was built on Edge, the system could interact with webpage content directly rather than relying solely on screen images.

The Project Was Designed To Travel

The leaked material describes Aion as a web-based agent OS that could run across different platforms. The project referenced Android’s open-source AOSP foundation, Win3 and Windows 11.

That points to an architecture built around a common web shell rather than a conventional Windows installation tied to one hardware platform. The approach could also support different device formats, with the leaked interface showing layouts for landscape, portrait and docked use.
